Caregiver Thread - November Rap Session

The Caregiver Thread

Session Topic
Understanding 504 Plans: A Guide for Families of Children with Hemophilia

Community Co-Hosts: Leisa M & Melissa P

Each Caregiver Thread rap session will begin with a Conversation Guide who will help introduce the topic and share insights for approximately 30 minutes. The focus of the program is not a presentation, but a supportive conversation where caregivers can share experiences, ask questions, learn from one another, and build meaningful connections.

Sending a child with hemophilia to school comes with questions most parents never expected to ask. This class breaks down the 504 Plan, a federal civil-rights protection that ensures your child gets equal access to education and the safety accommodations they need. You'll learn what a 504 Plan is, how it differs from an IEP, why hemophilia qualifies even for a high-achieving student, and exactly how to request one. We'll walk through the accommodations that matter most for bleeding disorders: modified PE, emergency protocols, safe storage of clotting factor, excused medical absences, staff training, and more. You'll leave knowing your rights, the documents to gather from your HTC, and the concrete steps to put a plan in place.

What you'll learn:
- What a 504 Plan is and how it protects your child under the law
- 504 Plan vs. IEP, and why hemophilia qualifies
- How to request a plan and what documentation your HTC should provide
- Hemophilia-specific accommodations, from PE to emergency response
- What to do if a school doesn't comply
